Sports Economics: How Teams and Leagues Make Money
India's Favourite game: Cricket
The rush of adrenaline, goosebumps, and nail-biting anxiety towards the end of a match, when one wicket or one run can make or break the game. A stadium in uproar after a win, a thrill that makes the game worth it. Apart from these glorious moments, have we ever thought of what goes on behind all that glory? How do these leagues and teams make money?
The economics of sports is pretty simple. It's like building a brand. All you need is a unique idea, a team, and the right audience. In countries such as India, cricket is a religion; the players are gods, and a win is celebrated like a festival.
Leagues and teams have three main goals- engaging the audience, boosting the economy and making money.
Let's talk about how teams and leagues make money-
- Player auctions and endorsements: We've all heard of auction houses such as eBay and OSIAN'S, and the main function of these houses is to auction items to the highest bidder. Similarly, in leagues like the IPL, players are bid for a season or a specific tournament. This is the primary source of income for leagues like the IPL.
- Sponsorships: Brand deals, television advertisements, teams signing agreements with beverage companies, mobile phone brands, and being paid to promote their products, etc. This is one of the crucial sources of income for teams.
- Ticket sales: Though they are a relatively small source of revenue, they are crucial. Ticket sales help generate a generous amount during match days or seasons.
- Match day revenue: The food, drinks, and hospitality available in the stadium during the match come under match day revenue.
- Commercial activities: Friendly games, tours, sports events, activities, brand endorsements, and campaigns help promote teams and generate income.
Sports leave a lasting effect on one's life, shaping not just their physical abilities but also their character and outlook. It teaches them life, patience, teamwork, discipline, goal setting, controlling emotions, etc. Through participation in sports, individuals learn essential life skills that resonate far beyond playing on the field.
