Social Media Trends in 2025

Social media. Is it a friend or a foe? I believe the deciding factor is how an individual uses it. There is an age limit for a reason- An age limit for driving, consumption of alcohol, visiting clubs, etc. Though many may disagree, try and think of it this way, think of it as a height restriction for a rollercoaster ride in an amusement park, logically, why is there a height limit? So you don't fall out of the seat and drop dead. In the same way, a certain level of maturity is required when using social media. And in this age, it mostly definitely is extremely dangerous or more useful than we think.

When I showed a friend the above paragraph, he said the Australian government would love me. I think I'd love their country, too. When I was younger, I always thought my parents were holding me back by not giving me a phone or social media, but now that I have these, I realise how influenced I am by them. Sure, many kids can control their social media use, but not everyone can. Though many are against the "no social media before 16" rule in Australia I think it's the best decision ever, and no I'm not 40. I see all these "Sephora kids" dressing up 20, doing skincare, putting on makeup, personally I think it's important to look your age and act like it too. Nowadays 12-year-olds look 20 and 20-year-olds 12. But anyway, let's talk about the influence.

Social Media Trends in 2025

What's next? Let's talk about 2025 trends.

Some of the popular trends seen this year are-

  • Shorts/Reels- There is a steady growth in the short videos segment, it still manages to have the audience in a chokehold. Economically it has its benefits, market research shows, that people tend to get more influenced when they see something on reels or shorts than live. This helps brands attract spenders and influencers get paid, which on the whole has a positive impact on the economy.
  • In-app shopping- Shopping on Instagram, and Pinterest will gain more momentum this year since people are developing a very short attention span and are way too lazy to step outside, this will be beneficial for all our dear brain rot apps and websites. I agree they have their benefits like convenience of buying and less transaction risk, but they also tend to rot our brains.
  • Niche communities: Apps like BeReal will influence new trends, and people will move towards more raw and real content over curated and edited content.
  • Micro news- Micro news or news that gets to the point faster. since we have a declining attention span, people will now only prefer new in 3 lines, or in the form of shorts or reels. which is good since it means less printing on paper and more saving trees but can't say the same for our eyes.

Therefore, Economic benefits- sure, Financial draining- also sure, Brain rot- double sure.

Since there is no longer any saving for us, I suggest we all move to Australia to experience an actual childhood.
